Swim the Serpentine! (Part 2)
Daryl Desmond
My Story
I work at South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust as the lead for physical health. Last year I completed a 1 mile swim and this year I wanted to push myself a bit further by doubling the length of the swim to 2 miles!
Every day in my role as a Physical Health Lead, I see first-hand the connection between mental and physical health, yet people living with serious mental illness still experience some of the most profound physical health inequalities of any group in our society. We have a lot of work to do to reduce that inequality and your donation will help the trust enhance patient experience. I’m privileged to work alongside dedicated professionals who go above and beyond to support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. That’s why I’ve chosen to fundraise for South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.
Over the past year I have lost two people to cancer, one of whom was one of my closest friends and colleague at the trust, Dan Brown. Dan was such a strong advocate for parity of esteem, the balance between mental and physical health, he's the main reason why I now work in a mental health trust as a general trained nurse. Dan worked closely with a charity called Co Labs, dedicated to empowering young creatives who have undergone treatment for cancer or have long term health conditions. They provide artistic, practical and emotional support through the development of musical skills such as writing, composing, recording and playing. As a musician I know the value in music as therapy and that's why I'm asking for any potential donations to be split equally between South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust and Co Labs.
If you are considering spliting your donation then after donating here please head to www.colabsmusic.com/category/all-products to help there too.
Thank you all so much, your support and donations will really help me get round that second mile! As always swimming puns are appreciated with each donation!
